At Akomar, we believe that strong relationships are the foundation of successful logistics. This applies not only to our customers, but also to our employees. In this edition of our Employee Spotlight series, we introduce Rody Kruis, who has been part of the Akomar team for nearly 14 years.
From Sprinkler Systems to Logistics
Today, Rody Kruis (39) is an experienced member of our export department, but his career started in a completely different industry. Before joining Akomar, he spent several years installing sprinkler systems.
As the eldest son of Managing Director and owner Arjan Kruis, he was already familiar with the logistics world. After working in another industry for several years, he felt increasingly drawn to the family business.
"It took some getting used to at first. I went from working with my hands every day at different locations to sitting behind a desk in the same office every day. But I quickly developed a passion for the business."
With both his father and mother working as experienced freight forwarders, logistics was never entirely unfamiliar to him. Over the years, he has grown into a versatile colleague with extensive industry knowledge and experience.
No Two Days Are the Same
As an Export Operations Specialist, Rody is responsible for organizing and coordinating shipments received through customers and overseas agents.
"My work mainly consists of planning transportation for shipments that come in through our customers and agents. These can be container shipments, air freight, or LCL shipments."
While logistics is built on planning and structure, every day brings new challenges.
"Vessel delays, truck drivers experiencing issues at terminals, and the lack of up-to-date information from shipping lines can make the job quite challenging at times. And that's without even mentioning the discussions surrounding disputes."
According to Rody, it is exactly this dynamic environment that makes the work so interesting.
Personal Contact Makes the Difference
When asked what sets Akomar apart from other logistics service providers, Rody doesn't hesitate.
"Our customers know exactly who we are and what we've been good at for many years. Personal service and acting quickly are where we truly make a difference."
In his opinion, personal contact has become more important than ever.
"At many shipping lines, personal contact isn't what it used to be. That's why I've come to appreciate how important it is to remain accessible to customers. A quick phone call to ask how their weekend was or simply letting them know you're there to help goes a long way. Customers really value that."
To strengthen these relationships, Akomar regularly organizes activities for customers and business partners.
"In addition to our daily communication, we also like to organize events. Recently, we hosted a padel tournament that attracted many customers from the region. We also regularly attend Feyenoord matches together with customers."
A Close-Knit Team
Strong connections are not only important with customers, but also within the team. When asked to describe Akomar as an employer, Rody's answer is simple and straightforward:
"A great place to work, with the right people in the right positions."
According to him, the colleagues are what truly make the difference.
"The atmosphere among colleagues is excellent. And of course, it also helps that I work close to home," he says with a laugh.
Team building plays an important role in maintaining that positive culture.
"We do a lot together outside of work. Not only social gatherings, but also sports activities. Every week, a group of colleagues can be found on the padel court."
In addition, Akomar actively supports employee development through training courses and educational opportunities.
"Various courses are offered on a regular basis, and everyone is welcome to sign up."
Great Memories
After nearly 14 years with Akomar, Rody has built up many great memories.
"Dublin, Barcelona, and Málaga were fantastic company trips. But the memorable evenings in the AkoBAR will always stay with me as well."
And how are successes celebrated?
"Besides the annual trips, we're always hoping for a nice bonus at the end of the year," he says with a wink.
Proud of the Team
Rody is a great example of what defines Akomar: commitment, flexibility, expertise, and personal service. Every day, he dedicates himself to supporting our customers and colleagues, and we are incredibly proud to have him as part of our team.
Thank you for your dedication, Rody!
